    A Bridge under the Highway

    At the end of the 20th century, when some large cities began to invest in public space in the city center, St. Louis was no exception. Landscape architects realized that investing downtown result in an improved public realm. So the aim of developing Gateway Mall is transforming downtown’s central park into a remarkable open space that defines the heart and soul of St. Louis.

    There is a direct gap between the area in the south and the highly-invested gateway mall. There is a highway and a railway, few buildings in the south, and a lot of open space is used as parking lots. This fragmentation restricts the future development of the downtown.  

    This project is to make the large-area parking lot below the highway be developed and utilized by more people, and form a connection with the Gateway Mall. In addition, the design will also serve as an important place for tailgating, providing a more comfortable and beautiful environment for people to gather and celebrate when there are big sports events.
