River Behavior: Channelization & Confluence of River Des Peres is an analytical study of how an urban river transforms over time and the consequences of that transformation on the surrounding landscape. Focusing on the River Des Peres in St. Louis, the project documents the river's historical course in the 1920s against its current channelized state, tracing how the shift from a natural, meandering waterway to an engineered canal has progressively altered the relationship between the river and its adjacent land uses — residential neighborhoods, green space, commercial and industrial zones.

The study examines eight cross-sectional sites along the river's corridor, revealing a consistent pattern: where the historic course once supported natural riverbanks and open landscape, today's channelized infrastructure has created hard edges, reduced ecological buffers, and compressed the river into a managed utility. The project further investigates four distinct confluence typologies — "Y," "Double S," "y," and "T" intersections — analyzing each through the lenses of hydrology, land use, flood safety, water quality, and river section. Together, these readings show how the angle and geometry of confluence points shape flood risk, ecological health, and the quality of life in riverside neighborhoods.

Situated at the edge of the Mississippi River watershed, River Behavior ultimately asks how St. Louis might reckon with the hidden infrastructure of its urban waterways — and what is lost when a river is no longer allowed to behave like one.
